Smart Home on a Budget: AliExpress vs Amazon

By SecretAli Editorial · Updated March 2026 · 9 min read

Building a smart home does not have to cost thousands of dollars. We built two identical smart home setups — one using products exclusively from AliExpress and one using products from Amazon — to compare cost, quality, reliability, and ease of setup. The results were surprisingly close in most categories, with the AliExpress setup costing 60% less overall.

The Test Setup

We equipped a standard two-bedroom apartment with the following smart home devices: four smart plugs, two smart bulbs, one smart LED strip, one WiFi security camera, one motion sensor, one temperature and humidity sensor, and one smart scale. Both setups were controlled through Google Home and Amazon Alexa voice assistants.

Cost Comparison

The total cost for the Amazon setup was $287. The total cost for the identical AliExpress setup was $112. That is a savings of $175, or 61%. Here is the breakdown by category:

Setup and Compatibility

Both setups used the Tuya/Smart Life platform, which is the underlying technology behind most budget smart home devices regardless of where you buy them. This was a critical finding: many "Amazon-exclusive" smart home brands are simply Tuya-based devices with different branding. The same app, the same cloud platform, and the same Alexa/Google Home integration.

Setup time was comparable. The AliExpress devices required the same Tuya/Smart Life app, the same WiFi pairing process, and the same voice assistant linking steps. No additional configuration was needed.

Reliability After 6 Months

After six months of daily use, both setups performed similarly. The smart plugs from both sources had zero connectivity issues. The smart bulbs maintained consistent brightness and color accuracy. The LED strips held their adhesive backing equally well. The WiFi cameras delivered comparable video quality (1080p, night vision, two-way audio).

The one area where the Amazon setup had a slight edge was firmware updates. Amazon-sourced devices received updates slightly more frequently, though the AliExpress devices also received periodic updates through the Tuya platform. Both sets of devices remained functional and connected throughout the test period.

Our Recommendation

For most smart home categories, AliExpress offers comparable quality at significantly lower prices. The devices use the same underlying technology (Tuya), work with the same voice assistants, and deliver the same core functionality. The trade-off is slower shipping and more limited customer support.

Our recommended approach is to buy your initial smart home devices from AliExpress to minimize the upfront investment, then replace individual devices with Amazon alternatives only if you encounter specific issues. In our testing, we did not need to replace any of the AliExpress devices, but having that option provides peace of mind.

Pro tip: Many AliExpress sellers now offer shipping from local warehouses in the US and Europe. These orders arrive in 3-7 days and are processed through the same logistics networks as domestic orders. Filter for "Ships from United States" when available.
